Forget Gregg’s vegan sausage reel, giving such traditional meat free’ Glamorgan’ sausage roll with a vegan twist a try instead.
Despite being championed most recently by heading cooks including The Hairy Bikers and John Torode, today few Britons outside Wales are aware of Glamorgan Sausages and the British Leek Growers Association is keen to address this.
Tim Casey, Leek farmer and Chairman of the British Leek Growers Association said: “The traditional Glamorgan Sausage really does deserve a wider public. It’s fantastically tasty, inexpensive to brace, expends seasonal, British parts and are likely to be slapped up in minutes.
“To bring this historic recipe bang up to date and in order to celebrate St David’s Day 2019, we have commissioned a special, vegan Glamorgan Sausage Roll- which we’re self-confident will give Greggs’ offering a run for its money.”
Vegan Glamorgan sausage reel
For the sausage assortment:
150 g leeks( around 2 small-minded leeks) 100 g breadcrumbs 1 1/2 tsp inhaled paprika 1 1/2 tsp sage 1 tsp mustard Large perforate black pepper 2 tbsp nutritional yeast 250 g apple sauce( unsweetened if possible)
For the pastry:
1 expanse exhale tart( 270 g) 1/4 cup capital( I worked 1/2 capital cube with roasting water) 1 tbsp black sesame grains
Preheat the oven to 200 oC.
Finely chop the leeks then compute the spices, breadcrumbs and nutritional yeast and mixture together. Then lend the pot of applesauce and combining until everything is fully coated.
Get in there with your hands, and flatten the smorgasbord into 3 similarly sized sausages( it helps if they’re nearly the same length as the shortest slope of the pastry sheet ).
Wrap the sausage mix in tin foil then pop in the fridge for 20 minutes.
Remove from fridge, then gently fry in a tsp olive oil for 6-7 minutes until turning gilded on each side.
Lay the membrane of pastry on a flat surface, sounds one of the sausages along the shortest feature, then flatten the membrane over to compile the first sausage rotation. There should be a little overlap in the pastry, so exploiting a fork crimp the edge to assistance shut it. Reproduce this with the two other sausages then lightly wash in the vegetable inventory mix.
Gently score the highest level of the pastry with a knife then finish with a spray of black sesame grains. If you have any leftover pastry, get imaginative and cut out letters or determines to sounds on top of the sausage rolls
Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until golden. Allow to cool( if you’re patient fairly) and enjoy!
